History of Norway

Generation No. 1

1. Paul Anderson Woken was born June 14, 1857 in Selbu, Norway, and died December 1921 in Northwood ND. He married Kari Pedersdatter Aftret 1881 in Atwater MN, daughter of Peder Aftret and Karen Tuseth. She was born June 24, 1859 in Selbu, Norway, and died April 1944 in Northwood ND.

Paul and Kari are buried at West Union Cemetery in Northwood. Olga Williams, their daughter, says that Woken, in Norwegian, means something like culdesac or dead-end/turnaround in road, which sort of describes the little valley he lived in.

Jacobsen's Stamtavle says Paul Anderson Eidem Wokken.

In a message to the Norway Genealogy Club (Yahoo) on 11/28/99, "Mike Deb 2000" says:

The oldest census in Norway was collected 1660-1663 and does not include many areas of Norway. Most of the extensive church records, which would be of unimaginable help to Norwegian genealogists, were confiscated by the Danish authorities long ago (when Norway was unified with Denmark) and moved to Denmark. These records were lost in a fire while stored in Denmark. Therefore due to this negligence/unfortunate mishap, the info reflecting periods pre-1600 will be a fraction of what once was.
