Generation No. 1

1. Theodora Louise McIlhargey was born December 19, 1874 in Lucan, Biddulph Twsp, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada, and died December 20, 1962 in Grand Forks, ND. She married James Bernard McCabe January 24, 1899 in St. Mary's, Lindsay, Victoria, Ontario, Canada, son of Michael McCabe and Mary McCabe.

Theodora's Baptism: January 1, 1875, St Patrick's, Lucan, Ontario. Sis' papers say Dora's Godfather was Zachariah McIlhargey (probably her father Patrick's brother), and her Godmother was Mrs. Jane Frank Wells, the wife of Charles Wells, her father's cousin.

Listed as "Dora" in 1881 Ontario census. I originally had that she was born in Lindsay, but Sis' papers say she was born in London Ontario, and moved as a baby in 1875 with her parents to Lindsay. Marriage record says she was born in Lucan.

James' Immigration: 1883, from Lindsay, Canada, to Arvilla ND.

ND Naturalization records list James McCabe, from Canada, declaring and receiving his citizenship on 3/1/1890 in GFC, vol D9, pg8, and vol F23 pg 96, respectively.

James' Occupation: farmer, rural mail carrier. The GFC Heritage Book v2 (p169) shows that J.B. McCabe owns 40 acres in the NE corner of section 15, Hegton Twsp. That same page also shows the south 1/2 of Hegton Twsp section 10 in Theodora McCabe's name. It also shows the SE 1/4 of Hegton Twsp section 3 in her name.

Gertrude was known as "Sis". She attended school in Larimore, graduating from HS in 1921. She obtained a Teaching Certificate from Valley City State College (ND) Teacher's College in 1922. She taught in Grand Forks County rural schools. 4 years in one-room schools, and then 2 years as Asst Principal at Logan Center Consolidated.

So the children could attend schools, they purchased a house in Larimore and moved there from their farm in 1943. She served on the Larimore school board and was a charter member of the Logan Center Homemakers Club. She also was active in Federated, and Music Clubs. She was state and nationally certified by Music Teachers National Association, and was a National Piano Guild Teacher. She had over 25 Myra Foundation Music Scholarship winners among her pupils. Sis was the accompanist for the Grand Forks County Chorus directed by "Pop" Roland in the '50's and '60's. The antique pump organ in the vestibule of St. Stephen's, the original organ of the parish, was put on display by Sis. As a tribute to her many years of service, Monsignor Mulvaney used a picture of Sis as a model when he ordered the beautiful stained glass window of St. Cecilla (the Patron Saint of Organists) for the choir loft.

She taught private piano lessons for 45 years and played organ for St. Stephen's Catholic Church for 67 years.  When her oldest son, Vince, died unexpectedly in 1984, Sis became quite depressed and was never her former self.
